Course Description:   Students will learn the basic elements of design and evaluation of human computer interfaces. Topics will include interface design, ergonomic consideration, interface design best practices, integrating design with user requirements, and common design elements of computer interfaces. Programming will be required.

Minimum Technical Requirements

Students enrolled in this course must be able to:

  • Use Falcon Online tools, assignments and bulletin boards
  • Access to a computer to use specified design software 

Student Learning Outcomes:

The student will be able to:

  1. Develop a computer interface to meet a set of requirements.
  2. Evaluate functionality and usability of a computer interface
  3. Identify and describe all issues associated with computer interfaces including ergonomic, psychological, cultural, and accessibility issues.

Classroom Policies

Disclaimer: Teaching policies and regulations for this course are not open for discussion or negotiation. This syllabus has been constructed to be as complete as possible but is by no means a binding document. I reserve the right to alter policies, procedures, and the syllabus as needed. Please utilize the website regularly as any changes to the syllabus will be posted there.

How to proceed through the course: Students will be able to view all class video segments which are crucial to success on the course exams. Students will also complete 10 assignments as part of the class. A bulletin board for all course activities is provided for questions in Falcon Online.

Handling of assignments: Assignments will be submitted using the Assignments tool in Falcon Online

Communication: Students are expected to ask questions using the discussion tool (bulletin boards) inside Falcon Online. In the case of a private question or question about grades – the students should email the instructor.

Interaction: Group activities are required for the course. Students should clearly read all assignment instructions and use the discussion boards to ensure they clearly understand the requirements.

Attendance and Lateness Policy: Late assignments will be accepted for students that have demonstrated they are making sufficient efforts to complete the assignments.

Late Work/Make-up Work and Exams:  Students should make all efforts to complete the assignments on time. If circumstances or difficulty of assignment makes this impossible, the student should contact the instructor to request an extension. Exams must be taken within the window of time the exam is available. If you are unable to take the exam during this time frame you must contact the instructor to make alternate plans.

Evaluation/Assessment Methods: There are 10 assignment modules, and 3 exams. Students will be assessed based on the grades obtained on these.

Grading Policy:  A detailed description of the grading is included with each assignment. The percentages of credit for each element of grading is included below.

90-100% A
80-90% B
70-80% C

Classroom Etiquette – All students are expected to be respectful of their peers.
